Late 19th Century Japanese Usu Table
Late 19th Century Japanese Usu Table
From the Tohoku area of Japan. The tabletop comes in 2 parts. A single thick solid hardwood top with a hand carved mortar base. The top is estimated to be at least 50 years old. It was probably used as a work table or stand. Deeply grained, naturally grooved, but with an even, smooth touch. The base is a hand-carved antique Keyaki Zelkova mortar, "Usu" in Japanese, made of Keyaki Zelkova. Faded naturally by age, beautiful, marble-like grains with a smooth touch. The lumbers from Tohoku area are generally of superb quality - exhibiting durability, heaviness, and beautiful grains - because the trees are growing slowly & aging in the cold weather. Growing slowly means tightly packed, and the cold weather prevents the lumbers from damage.
